[comp.sys.apple] IIgs Hard Drives

roberth@microsoft.UUCP (Robert Hess) (11/20/89)

I'm thinking about getting a hard drive for my GS... no, make that I'm
*going* to get a hard drive for my GS. Now the big question is, which
  one?

At first, I was going to build my own, but after comparing costs, I
found that it wasn't *that* much more expensive to buy a factory built
one, thus getting a warranty, and technical support (hopefully).

So far, best 'bang for your buck' drive I have found, is from Ehman.
They even have a special 'Users Group' pricing, which is:

    20mb $375
    30+ $425 (ST138N)
    45 $469 (ST157N)
    60+ $549 (ST277N)
    80+ $619 (ST296N)

So, my question is, before I (and others in my users group) take the
plunge, does anybody have any comments regarding the quality of Ehman,
or the Segate drives they use? Or Alternatives? I have heard some
mention of the fact that the 'Mac' documentation that Ehman sends with
their drives is confusing (but *we* don't need to worry about that!)
As well as a couple other 'dealing with the company' problems. But if
the hardware is good, and they honor their 2 year warranty, then to me
it sounds like a good deal.

The prices you give are outrageous compared to deals I've
seen.
I'm seeing INCREDIBLE deals in the paper lately. I saw a 120
meg SCSI drive for about $800.
But I think I'm gonna get either the removable CARTRIDGE drive (45
megs/cartridge) or the high capacity FLOPPY drive (20 megs/floppy...each
floppy costs $10).
I want something REMOVABLE so I don't have to back up to floppies.
Unless you want to get ripped off, don't buy those drives. Or
I guess you could consider it paying for a name or other things.

Those sound line/probably are prices for bare drives. As such, they're not
outstanding. I've seen better prices in Computer Shopper. I paid $419 for an
ST157N. The price for the ST138N is _way_ out of line, though.

By "bare drive", I mean you'll need to add a power supply and presumably, a
case of some sort. This will add another $125 or so to the cost. (I used a
power supply from a dead PC clone (Use # 997 for a Dead PC :) and didn't
bother with a case. You can cut _some_ corners. But watch it!

I don't know anything of Ehman. The Seagate ST 1xxN series seems to be
quite decent, and come with a 1 year factory warranty, which Seagate will
honor even if the dealer does not, though it will cost you $35. Peanuts,
relatively speaking. I've been very pleased with mine. However, I've been a
great deal less pleased with the ST-238R, and the ST-255__ <No letter suffix)
models. Both have gone through periods of nearly nonexistent QA. Neither are
SCSI, but there _are_ adapters for 'em, to the //. Just say no.

One point of info as a bonus for anyone who cares. In the drive
designation, the ST-1 indicates that this is a 3.5" frame, while the ST-2
indicates a 5.25" frame. The trailing letter or absence thereof indicates the
drive class or type, with R being RLL and N being SCSI. Blank indicates an MFM
drive. Alas, advertisers often omit that last letter. Make sure of what you're
buying...

David,

Correct, if those prices were for 'bare' drives, then they wouldn't be very
good. But those are prices for COMPLETE drives, that means they include
Drive, PowerSupply, Case, and SCSI Cable. All you need is the SCSI card and
you are all set. Thus their price is amazingly good, but is it *too* good?

Does anybody have any horror stories regarding Ehman? Or better yet, does
anybody have any success stories regarding them. Heck, does anybody out there
even HAVE and Ehman drive on their IIgs?

Another comperable question would be - if you DO know of SPECIFIC ads which
have better prices please let us know about them!

A guy in my user group was talking (this past summer) about his bad experience
with Ehman. Apparantly, they claimed their drives were compatible with all
IIgs w/Apple's SCSI card, but the drive he received didn't work with his IIgs.
It didn't work with the dealer's IIgs, nor his friend's. He sent it back in
and a few months later received another one which didn't work. He returned it
and after much hassle and many toll phone calls received his money back. (BTW,
the drives worked flawlessly with Macs...) One of his techie friends thought
it was some kind of problem with the drive being improperly terminated.

I was kind of disappointed, 'cause I was shopping for a hard drive and thought
that Ehman's drives looked like real bargains. I finally got a 40 meg Vulcan
from AE and am satisfied 'cept for the lack of space. :-)

Could it be the Ehman drives aren't _low_ level formatted for your GS?
They come formatted for Mac's, don't they?
