[comp.sys.apple] HELP. Need lode-runner virus info

KMILES@CC.USU.EDU ("Kurt Miles, VAX Consultant") (11/22/89)

Help!

I just got hit by the lode-runner virus. I saw all those articles a while
back, but I didn't keep them. (Dumb, huh?)

Anyway, I cna't remember how to check all the other disks. Fortunately (or
not, depending) I don't have a hard drive. It did wipe out the floppy though,
but I reformatted and rebuilt that. problemis I'm not sure where the SOB came
in. I have been using these programs for a long time, and I've never had a
problem before.

I haven't added anything in over three weeks, so.. where is it hiding now?

If some kind soul in netland would mail me the files that were running aroung
about the lode runner virus, I would be extrememly grateful.

Thanks.

Kurt

How do you get a virus from a commercial program?

I don't think Kurt said it was a commercial program. Public domain
and shareware programs are also great targets for viruses.

Sorry, I thought that he had gotten the virus from the Broderbund game
of that name. I thought that this may have been the first case (that I
had heard of) of a virus being planted by the infamous disgruntled
employee.

Actually, it was first discovered via the lode-runner game if I remember
correctly, and thus was named. Actually, it is a boot virus, one that erases
blocks 0 and 1 of the disk being booted (warm boot) after being booted from
another disk. I think I got it from a homegrown program given to me by a
friend, but I'm not sure. I received a lot of information from other son the
net, and even got a program to check to see if any of the other disks were
infected. It looks like I got the culprit, and I haven't found any other
infected disks.

I will ask the author of the message and program if I can post it, since it
came via e-mail, and if he says ok, I'll post it.

The so-called "Lode Runner" virus has nothing to do with the game. In fact,
the virus's name is LOAD Runner, not LODE Runner. Obviously a pun of some
sort. (See the latest A2-Central.)
