There seems to be some misunderstanding as to the use of FTP with respect to Proline sites such as Pro-Beagle. Just because a site has an internet-style address, it's still not necessarily on the internet. All the proline sites (i.e. j.q.public@pro-anywhere.cts.com) are uucp sites that are "linked" to cts.com for mail forwarding. That means that they can exchange mail, but they are not linked up in "real time" such that you can FINGER, FTP, TELNET, etc... Many people are confusing internet connetivity with running Unix. This is also a misconception. While many Unix boxes are connected to the internet, many are not. And, people can FTP to and from any system that runs the protocol. That includes Unix, Macintosh (with various software such as MacIP and NCSU TELNET <I think>), MS-DOS (with the appropriate software), VMS, TOPS-10/20, MTS (which I'm currently using), and lots of other systems. Try the Mac and IBM forums to find out about what "the appropriate software" is, and whether you can use it since that falls outside of this group's expertise. The long and short of this discussion is: Pro-Beagle is not an internet site. It has no FTP number and you cannot reach it via this protocol. So, save up your pennies to pay the phone company if you want their software. It's not going to appear on the FTP sites (such as my own 35.1.1.43 -- him1.cc.umich.edu) or Apple2-L since Beagle Bros. has unequivocally stated that they want exclusive distribution. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Todd A.
