[net.movies] 2010 review - noted spoiler sections

jeh@ritcv.UUCP (Jim Heliotis) (12/12/84)

I rarely read a book before seeing a film , but I did this time, so I am
having hard time reviewing 2010 on the same par with other films I have
seen -- for one thing, all the tension was gone for me, knowing the plot.

Nevertheless, because of the pluses, visually stunning and good character
development (esp. Russian commander), I would recommend the movie.

I do wish there had been more good music, as in the first, and no noise in
space, but what the heck, Hyams is improving.

I assume people with complaints about his understanding of gravity are
claiming that the force (G*m1*m2/(r*r) ? ) generated by a man's body and
the command module of the Discovery would not be sufficient to hold him to
it, especially with that rotating going on.

Now for slight spoilers....

I was disappointed that the "race with the Chinese", and what that green
creature did to them was eliminated from the movie, but what the heck,
I suppose it was not essential. Actually, this is one place where Hyams
tried to be like Kubrick and keep you guessing about what happened.
He tried to give a way very little about those Europan creatures, compared
to the book.

It's a nice thought that our leaders would stop a war if they saw another
sun in the sky, but ... Really!

Did the ending of the movie remind anyone else of the end of Star Trek II?

Mark Leeper has already said <181@ahuta.UUCP>:
> fiction. The trailers and script promise that at the end of the film
> "something wonderful" will happen. ...
> The impact of the something wonderful on the audience

> That makes the big surprise at the end something of a letdown.

And, yes, he meant STAR TREK II.
