[comp.sys.apple] Lode Runner

yk4@cunixb.cc.columbia.edu (Yong Su Kim) (12/15/89)

I just got hit by the Lode Runner virus.
Good thing I had photonix which killed the virus.
Kinda makes you wonder who created the virus.

Two questions:

1) What Lode Runner virus? (excuse me if I've been living under a rock)

2) How much memory does Photonix need to run? I can't get it working on my
   ROM 03 1 meg GS

The Lode Runner (sic) virus (really called LOAD Runner) is a harmless virus
that only affects block zero on your disks. It originated in France and was
reportedly written by a guy who calls himself CAPSLOCK. Jay Jennings (an A2
sysop on GEnie) has actually talked to this character via Minitel, the French
online service, and reports that the virus does no damage to any files on your
disks, it just eradicates the boot block when it "goes off". Evidently the
guy wrote it just to see how far it would spread.

Photonix doesn't run on a ROM 3 GS. It has nothing to do with how much RAM
you have (you have enough); evidently the program (and Nucleus as well) calls
some udocumented entry points in the ROM.

By the way, speculating that the FTA folks created the virus just because
both the FTA and this CAPSLOCK guy are French may be a fallacy. They may know
CAPSLOCK, or they may not -- France is a big country. (Well, they probably
know him now that he's got Load Runner out there, and has made a name for
himself, so to speak.)

Photonix doesn't work on ROM 03 machines. I think is says so in the docs
file. I can't remember the memory requirement, though.
