[comp.sys.apple] Memory upgrades for a ][+?

mha@batcomputer.tn.cornell.edu (Mark H. Anbinder) (12/13/89)

No doubt this is a really dense question by comparison to the normal
traffic here, but I hope someone will be willing to give me what should
be a fairly simple answer.

I need to know what upgrade paths there are for an owner of an Apple ][+
that has 64K. I'm fairly certain it can't be upgraded to a //e, but I
have no idea what options there are for adding memory or various other
forms of functionality.

Please respond via e-mail, as I don't follow this newsgroup (though
perhaps I should start...).

I posted a similar request a couple weeks back. Please send me mail or
post a response to this item. I suspect many of us starting with their
first hand-me-down apple might be interested.

I responded to Mark through email, but I wanted to use this opportunity to
mention a bug I discovered in the interaction between two such ][+
enhancements:

The SMT 1 Meg Expansion card ($99 unpopulated, through Computer Direct) is
fully compatible with the Apple 1 Meg card, and allows a speedy RAM disk for
the Plus.

Unfortunately, when combined with the original TransWarp (which also
significantly speeds up the Plus), neither the Apple or SMT brand of RAMdisk
is functional.

I tracked down the problem and developed a fix involving burning a new EPROM.
Without getting into details, the "fault" really isn't AE's or Apple's
(or SMT's). I made changes to the core routines of the RAMdisk transfer
routines which allow both cards to function together on a ][ Plus. I'm just
wondering what the legalities are concerning allowing others to benefit from my
modifications of this ROM. How many folks out there have a ][ Plus with both
the 1 Meg card AND the TransWarp, anyway?

Apple][+ can be expanded beyond 64k to run a patched version of AppleWorks.
Price Busters run ads in Incider. They carry cards to expand ][+ memory
aswell as the patch program to run AppleWorks on a ][+.
Send me personal E-Mail if you want more info.
