I just bought and installed an AMR 30 Meg hard drive on my second GS. The main reason I selected that one was that I found a dealer who carried it AND who gave a very good price ($700, including a SCSI card.) I was surprised to find that the SCSI card was NOT an apple SCSI, but AMR's own product. They claim it is fully SCSI compatible. So far it seems to work OK, but I have a couple of questions and hope someone may have some answers. (It came formatted into two 15 M partitions with 5.02 installed. I think the reason the dealer partitioned it is that he sells a lot of the higher capacity drives and just automatically partitions them all.) My questions. First, when booting, the thermometer doesn't advance properly; I assume that's because the interrupts are disabled. Can anything be done about it? Second, when the dealer installed the software he did not include either the SCSI manager or the apple SCSI driver. Would it do me any good to install those? It did not come with any SCSI driver, so I assume GSOS is generating one. Third, although both partitions are recognized and are accessible, only the first one is automatically opened on the desktop. Is that always a property of multi-partitioned devices? (This is the first time I've had one; I got my Everex on the other computer before generic partitioning was available and haven't had the courage to reformat it) Thanks TMPLee@Dockmaster.NCSC.MIL

I discovered the answer to one of my questions (actually, two): to get the finder to open up windows on the second partition you have to make sure there are finder.def and/or finder.root files on it. (I copied both over; don't know if that was overkill or not.) I also discovered that including the Apple SCSI drivers didn't hurt; couldn't tell if it helped either. (I was playing around with different configurations because some programs that used to work stopped working. I think its the GS/OS-hogs-and-fragments-memory problem: I got DeluxedPaint to work by dropping the RAM cache to 0; haven't yet been able to get BattleChess to work off the hard drive: guess I'll have to try purge-o-matic.)
