[comp.sys.apple] GS slot 4 setting

dcw@sun-bear.lcs.mit.edu (David C. Whitney) (01/01/90)

Some time ago it was mentioned that GS software would not need the
control panel setting for slot 4 set to "Mouse port" in order to work
(presumably because the firmware dealt with the mouse using ADB stuff
- I forget the details).

Well, this turns out to be false (or else I did something mighty
wrong). The big question is, how does one have active at the same
time: modem port, 80 cols, mouse, 3.5 drive, 5.25 drive and a SCSI
hard disk AND Appletalk? I originally tried this out by putting my
SCSI card in slot 4 and turning the mouse port off. I had no problems
with this as none of my 8-bit software uses the mouse. Once the
machine was up in the Finder, the mouse doesn't work. More
slot-swapping. Right now I have the SCSI in slot 6 - and conseqently
no 5.25 drive. I need all three drives available as I do occasionally
make up Z-Link disks for people. WHAT CAN I DO??

My employer pays me well. This, however, does not mean he agrees with me.
I wrote Z-Link & BinSCII. Send me bug reports. I use a //GS. Send me Tech Info.

Dave,
This setting only works on the Rom 3 Machine. If you have any GS before
the Rom 3, you can't do it.

Do you or anybody else with hard drives use Proterm as your comm program. If
you do, you can put your SCSI card in Slot 2, set the slot to your card and
your all set. Proterm addresses the GS Serial port directly, bypassing the
slot settings in the Control Panel. This is the way I have it set on my GS at
work. I also have set slot 7 for Appletalk, and use a mini-8 switch box to
switch between printing on the network and using the modem. Since I don't do
both at the same time, it works very neatly.

Take it easy for now,

Hi Dave,

To answer your questio about getting the mouse port, Appletalk, 80 columns
and a SCSI card to work (with both 5.25 and 3.5 inch disks), I'll first
assume that you have an older ROM 01 GS. The fix is simple, though
not really recommended. Put the SCSI card in SLOT 1. This will allow
Appletalk to work from slot 7, slot 5 and 6 can be used for disk purposes,
and slots 2, 3, and 4 can be left alone. Set slot 1 for the "your card"
setting, and everything will work. I had this configuration for
over a year on my older GS before I got a new one. Apparently
as someone in AppleDTS told me some time ago, even though the card
is supposed to go into slots 4, 5, 6, or 7, slot 1 will work also.
This will also allow you to use any network printer over Appletalk,
which I also assume that you are doing. Let me know if you have any problems
with this setup.

happy New Year!
