[comp.sys.apple] Need Help Writing GS Printer Driver

jordan@hpfcdj.HP.COM (Steve J. Jordan) (12/19/89)

Dear GS Junkies,

Does anyone know where I can get details about writing my
own printer drivers for the GS? (Maybe you guys at Apple would know...?)

As far as I can tell, there is no documentation out there on the subject.
My Apple IIGS Toolbox Reference manuals only state something to the effect of:
"At the time of this writing, no details on the internal structure of a printer
driver is available..."

Thanks, in advance, for any assistance provided!

I, being an eternal optimist, like to believe that if a lot of people ask the
same question, writing a Technical Note on it is the best way to solve it.

For this issue, that hasn't been the case. We released the complete printer
driver and port driver specifications about 19 months ago (Apple IIgs Technical
Notes #35 and #35), and yet there are more questions than ever on when are we
going to document these things.

(The last one was from a sysop of a national online network [no names] who
indignantly demanded that Apple stop hogging the market and release the specs
for printer drivers. He indignantly demanded this 18 months after the specs
had been released, and they had been available on his network for the past
year.)

I hope this answers your question, Steve, in a round-about whiny kind of way.

Since I confess to not following the Tech Notes, this may be a dumb question,
but is an index published regularly? Since the tech. notes are available on
many systems, maybe letting folks know that they can look at an index file to
find out what tech notes are out, and which note to look in might help.

Certainly. "About Technical Notes", or "Tech Note #0" is released with every
batch of Technical Notes (and in the paper batches, it's always the one on
top). It contains both a numerical "table of contents" and a subject index.

Where can I get an Index of all the Tech Notes published by Developer support.
This could alleviate many potential questions on my part.

Technical Note #0 ("About Technical Notes") always contains an index, both by
subject and by note. This is revised with every release of Technical Notes,
and should always be with them (it's the one on top of each paper batch).
