[comp.sys.apple] SCSI Hacker

shankar@SRC.Honeywell.COM (Subash Shankar) (01/03/90)

I have a problem using SCSI Hacker to do a lo-level hard drive format.

Symptoms:

Boot up System 5.0.2, double click on SCSI Hacker.
The program runs and gives a menu.
Select low level format and answer prompts appropriately.
Program prints a message saying something like "Formatting...Warning this may take
up to ten minutes".
About 2-3 seconds later, program terminates successfully (presumably) and
immediately runs the Prodos quit code (which returns to the Finder in this case).
No formatting has occurred (since all directories exist and are readable as
before).

Same problem occurs when running from Prodos 8 booted on a 3.5 drive, except
that it quits to the obnoxious Prodos quit routine instead of the finder.

Setup: unenhanced ROM 01 GS, 2.25 Megs, Rev. C Apple SCSI card (slot 7),
Mirror M40+ 40 Meg hard drive.

Any suggestions on what could be wrong?
Thanks.

(I'd also like to hear from any Apple owners who use Mirror hard drives).

I don't know about system 5.0.2 but I run under P8 1.4B.

I had the same problem. I kept on trying different interleaves and it finally
worked. Another suggestion is to try using HDFORMAT or HDFORMAT1.1. I don't
know if they are shareware or not... but I do have them. They work just as
as hacker.

If none of that helps... Try calling your local Apple dealer, the Makers of
the HD, or probably Seagate (which is the most commonly used drive (or so
i've found) in the pre-packaged SCSI systems).
