(This in reply to Cary Farrier's response) Sorry, the most recent documentation I have (the ProDos-16 REference) says there is only one byte of access control information, and that bits 4-2 are reserved; those are the ones I'm talking about. I gather now that the Finder has found a use for bit 2, which is why some (but not all) of the FINDER.xxx files have it set. I assume the ones in which it is set are the ones created and/or modified after I installed some level of GS/OS. But, that still leaves the question of how the other bits are being set.
