I'm pretty sure what Alan meant by doing a system check is the thing
where you hold down open-apple, option, control and press reset.  It
puts the GS through a sequence of internal tests (I don't know exactly
what gets tested).  You'll see pretty colors and patterns on your screen
as the test runs for close to a minute or so.

By the way, doing this test will reset your GS to any control panel
changes you made.  In other words you can turn your RAM disk on or off,
and instead of flipping the power switch, do a system test to make the
change take effect.

I believe the RAM disk gets trashed during the test.
