[comp.sys.apple] Communications software for Apple IIe

IC6JRHW@OAC.UCLA.EDU (Ron Webster) (01/08/90)

Dear Apple II users:

I recently posted an inquiry about comm software for the Apple II. I
received only a few responses, but most of them recommended ProTerm
(version 2.1). Subsequently, some Apple user groups with which I have
contact have recommended ReadyLink (the update of EasyLink) by Applied
Engineering. I need this for a friend who has an Apple IIe--it probably
has 128KB RAM (being that 128K has been standard for a long time), but I
don't know if he has an enhanced IIe. As I understand it, ReadyLink
requires an enhanced IIe.

I would appreciate comments from users having knowledge of ReadyLink,
EasyLink, ProTerm, or any other commercial comm packages that you would
strongly recommend (Kermit and other freeware packages are probably not in
the running--I can't access a BB from which to download the Apple II
version). Do any of these run well on a standard IIe? Are they easy to
use? Anything else you can tell me will be appreciated.

Also, has anyone out there heard of a comm package called Modem Manager?
If so, who is the publisher and where can I get it (or more information
about it)?

Finally, I'm a Mac user on BITNET. I get the Info-Mac Digest, but I can't
access comp-sys-apple postings, so PLEASE RESPOND TO ME DIRECTLY. Any
comments or recommendations will be very much appreciated.

You can download ZLink (shareware) from the APPLE2-L archive of
LISTSERV@BROWNVM and Kermit from KERMSRV@CUVMA or ftp from cunixc.Columbia.Edu
ProDOS Kermit is in file AAPPRO.BNS You'll need BinSCII (also in the APPLE2-L
archive) to unpack it.

If you have Mac Kermit, you can download to the Mac and use the File Transfer
Utilitty to transfer to ProDOS format. I believe ZLink requires an enhanced
//e, but Kermit and BinSCII do not.

Au contraire; send the command SUB INFO-APP to any hand LISTSERV and you'll
get the BITNET redistribution of comp.sys.apple (aka info-apple@Apple.Com).
In fact, you should send posts to info-apple@Apple.Com, not to comp-sys-apple!

You won't find apppro.bns there. In fact, the README file there says:

"Kermit files are on watsun.cc.columbia.edu [128.59.39.2]"

So, to get Kermit-65 you need to follow these steps:

1. ftp watsun.cc.columbia.edu
2. anonymous
3. guest
4. cd kermit/a
5. get apppro.bns
6. quit

Oops! mea culpa, thanks for the correction. Either Columbia hasn't
gotten around to updating AANETW.HLP or our system staff hasn't gotten
around to updating the local KERMIT disk (I *thought* I had seen a
change of address for the ftp machine in info-kermit, but was misled
by actually reading the documentation :-(
