[comp.sys.apple] apple2-l list

CC004019@BROWNVM.BITNET (Christopher Chung) (12/10/87)

Ok today we found out that LISTSERV robots are not very good at sending
mail to sites outside of bitnet. About 60 junk files were sent out to
everyone on the list. (If you think that is bad you should check out the
error files I got - more than 200!) My postmaster has asked that we get
another site on the arpanet or uucp site to distribute the mail to users
on that side of the gateway. How is the voting going over there. If we
don't get another site soon, I might be forced to delete all arpanet and
uucp sites.
Another thing is that the list will now be sent another way to reduce
the network load. This may mean that some users on the list may not
receive some of the mail. If this is so, please send me a message
personally and I'll see what I can do. I have not had time to read mail from
info-apple in a while so I don't know what is going on if you post this to the
list. This is being sent out to info-apple and to the apple2-l list.
If you are on both lists and you do not receive the copy from apple2-l
then you should send me a note saying that otherwise I have no way to know
if you got it or not.

Is it possible to get an 80 column version of the Apple2-L
servers list? I got an old list and find that it wraps around some
lines and that throws the printer off. Thanks in advance.

The short answer to the question is no. LISTSERV has no facility for
sending files in a line length other than what is stored. The INDEX
file (APPLE2-L FILELIST) is a Print format (133 character) file.
Frankly, it has some IBMish file information that I could do without
too, but what you see is what you get. Sadly, we have no control over
the format used to stre information about files contributed to the list.

The file can be sent in an 80 column format known as LPUNCH, but that
is a "wrapped around" file with coding in the first couple of columns
that permits you to write your own utility for restoring the original
file lengths (send any LISTSERV the command INFO LPUNCH and it'll send
you a file describing the LPUNCH format).

Dot matrix printers can print 133 character files on an 80 column carriage
using "compressed type" (that's why the compressed size is 17.6 characters
per inch - or whatever).

Subscribers to APPLE2-L may note that the rate of arrival of new files
has dropped recently. Here's the reason. Send electronic "get well"

I may not be sending out stuff on a regular basis. I broke my leg
this weekend and will be going in Monday for an operation. Although
I will have a mac portable at my disposal at the hospital (thanks to
apple) I may not log in as often due to how exhausting it is to type
while propping one leg up in the air!
