[comp.sys.apple] Latest 'modem tax' rumor is a "red herring"

SEWALL@UCONNVM.BITNET (Murph Sewall) (01/16/90)

I saw the call to action when it appeared on info-apple a month or so
ago. I have not seen the disclaimer before today (from the Social Science
Data list on BITNET <SOS-DATA@UNCVM1>). The advice at the end merits heeding!

As explained in the message below, the note I posted earlier this morning
this morning concerning surcharges for modem use was incorrect.
My apologies for passing along bad information. -- Jim

IMPORTANT NOTE:

The message about the proposed FCC regulation that would levy
surcharges on modem use has been appearing on several lists to
which I subscribe. Most of these lists have then run corrections
saying that the message is an old one that should have been deleted
some time ago, and that the FCC is no longer considering any such
proposal. One of the people who posted replies said that he checked
with the FCC himself and that they confirmed this. I no longer have
the original messages, so I cannot forward them to the list.

So, please check that the regulation is really back under consideration
before you take any action.
