[net.movies] 2001 and gravity

mfc@hp-pcd.UUCP (mfc) (12/09/84)

What makes you think there was gravity in the pod bay? Did you
actually see anything react to gravity (i.e. fall from mid-air to
the floor)? No. What you saw were a bunch of people using the
same 3-dimensional reference to each other, keeping their feet
firmly placed in that same "floor".

Haven't you ever hear of velcro?

-------------
It seems everyone has been bitching about Hyams treatment of gravity in
2010, but did anyone notice that in 2001 there was gravity in the pod bay.
This was outside the effect of the rotating portion of the Discovery, where
there shouldn't have been.

There was NOT gravity in the pod bay in 2001! Remember
the black squares on the floor? Remember the close up of
"grip shoe" toward the beginning? Did you notice that
Bowman and Poole walked uncertainly in the pod bay, but
not in the carousel? At least Kubrick made the effort.
There's about a 10 second scene in 2001 that may have gotten
axed in the 35mm version: Bowman 'standing' on one surface
taking readings on a clipboard, Poole 'standing' on a
surface at right angles to him. Great scene. The point
is that the zero gravity scenes in 2001 were as accurate
as Kubrick could make them. (There were some bloopers,
like liquid traveling back *down* the straw in a container.)
But in 2010 they didn't even try. Damn them!

Can't you guys suspend belief long enough to enjoy the movie? I can see
it now, me sitting there in the 8th row, while behind me...

"Thats wrong, that's all wrong!"
"Awww man, look, that doesn't happen in zero gravity!!?"
"What happened to the Chinese? Geez!"

I'd HATE to have been there when you saw Star Wars...

BLAM! BLAM! BLAM! "Teach YOU to ignore inertia!"
"You Fool! Put that gun away!"

I think you can ruin the enjoyment of anything if you examine it too
closely. You should've leaned back, ate some popcorn, and enjoyed it.
I did. I was impressed. The photography was excellent. Roy Scheider was
excellent. The Russian commander was excellent. Well done all around.
The opening about blew me away. Loved it. I'll give it an 8.5.
