[comp.sys.apple] Apple Thoughts

Keywords: IIc, Zmodem, Hard drives

Some one posted something about needing the new IIc roms to access more than
a 5 1/4" disk. I have been considering upgrading mine but am wary of the
trouble I could encounter. Could someone who has done this please tell me
EXACTLY what to do (so I can blame you instead :^) ). Or maybe I could get
Apple's OFFICIAL word how to make the exchange. You see, when AI releases
the internal hard drive I want to get one. Which reminds me, could anyone
who has bought anything from Applied Ingenuity give me info about the quality
of their work? I know the are relatively new...
Where is that Zmodem!!?? Where is "The Program of the Gods"?? Does anyone
have Zmodem for an Apple??
Is it possible to modify a Thunderscan for a Scribe?
How exactly does daisy chaining work? Sure, you plug all the drives together
and each drive is accessed in turn until all the drives have been searched
or the program is found. But what circuitry is used to access each drive
separately?

Does anyone know of a company wanting a summer intern who is majoring in
Computer Electrical Engineering. I am "only" a sophomore who is very
hard working and would extremely enjoy using his talents in the "real-
world".

Zmodem is available on Checkmate's ProTERM package.

Yeah but the problem is that all of the BBS packages for the apple // (or at
least all of the ones that I've seen (GBBS Pro, Modemworks, etc...) don't
support the protocol. I did see a supposed version of SuperTac for GBBS that
"supported Zmodem" but of course it didn't work. BTW, Is there anyone out
there that can write "USE" files for GBBS. I am looking for some protocol
drivers.

When you say Zmodem are you referring to the protocall, or an actual program
called Zmodem? If you are referring to the protocall, Proterm 2.1 supports it.
I don't know much about how Zmodem actually works, but it is supposed to be
much faster than Y or X modem.

I can't seem to get our systems reply function to work so keep having to just
Post replys. Hence the lack of a refer to in some Subject fields.

I was unable to find any technical data on how individual drives are accessed
through the smartport. Maybe it's some sort of company secret or something.
I suspect that there are a couple select lines which go high or low to tell
which drive is expected to respond, but I really don't know. I could guess how
I would do it, but of coourse it would all be conjecture. I have heard that the
drive port itself can handle 128 drives with up to 4 Gig per drive, but the
current GS software and other hardware have a problem with this. I would guess
that ideally someone could design a hard drive that plugs right into the disk
port on a chain.
