Well here comes more sad news for the Apple II world. The people now handling Applefest (Expo Management) told me today that there will NOT be an Applefest in Boston this year as previously announced. There will however be some sort of a show that they will promote in early May near New Brunswick, New Jersey, but they are looking to include other computers besides Apple. The exact name and scope of the show will be announced publicly within the next couple of weeks.. They not only want to include Macs in the show, but are also trying to figure a way to include the "Blue" machines also. They claim the educational software vendors are demanding it.. They claim the reason they have moved the show from Boston, was that most of the same people attend each year, and the vendors want to see new faces.. But then on the other hand, they say the fall show will remain in San Francisco, where it appears (from their comments) that the same faces don't bother anyone.. I am unsure from what they said what has become of Cambridge Marketing, which they claim is still there, although most of the officials of that company are no longer around, nor is the public relations person.. They did imply that a lot of vendors from past shows are not signing up, and that is why they want to include other computers, so they can attract new blood in the vendor area. They also implied that as of today, they still do not have a FIRM COMMITMENT from APPLE that they will appear. Apple almost did not attend Applefest last fall, it was only in the weeks just before the show that they say Randy Battat (sp) of Apple came to the rescue of the Apple II folks and got them the needed funds to attend. With the above in mind, remember that at the Nov 28th meeting between Apple and the developers assn, Apple committed to appearing at the spring Applefest, and only in the December developers did the listing of the show first appear on the list of events where Apple would appear, but the promoter still has no direct word from Apple of this commitment. Of course, the promoters could not answer my question of how Apple would take to the idea of blue machines appearing at a show using the name of Applefest, which is a registered Apple Trademark. Perhaps they will call it something else, and say it incorporates Applefest.. So there we have it, the first "confirmed" sad Apple II news of the 90's.. -- bsherman@mthvax.cs.miami.edu | bsherman@pro-exchange | MCI MAIL: BSHERMAN >> Miami's Big Apple - 305-948-8000 - 24 hours - 300/1200 - PCP'able << >> Oldest Apple support board in Southeast. In-Reply-To: message from bsherman@mthvax.cs.miami.edu (Bob Sherman) Bob... Perhaps they will call it a Computer Faire and drop the AppleFEST logo altogether. IF an all-products Computer Faire were held instead of an Apple-only exhibition I (and many others) might be able to justify the cost of travel to and from as well as the cost of being there. As it is, as much as I'd like to see new stuff and meet old friends I can't afford it. /steve +----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ | The RainForest BBS @ 305-434-4927 @ 19.2K bps Hayes @ 8mhz 65c02 @ 60 Megs | | P.O.Box 841422..Pembroke Pines..Florida..33084..SysAdmin : Steve Schneider | +----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ +===========================================================================+ | UUCP: crash!pro-exchange!sschneider COMPU$ERVE : 75166,2544 | | ARPA: crash!pro-exchange!sschneider@nosc.mil GENIE : sschneider | | INET: sschneider@pro-exchange.cts.com APLINK.PE : <shrug> | +---------------------------------------------------------------------------+ | The RainForest @ 305-434-4927 / PO Box 841422, Pembroke Pines, Fl, 33084 | +===========================================================================+

As it is, as much as >I'd like to see new stuff and meet old friends I can't afford it. >/steve Well it appears that you just may have your wish. The material I received today from the show promotors includes the statement they are mailing to exhibitors and a press release.. They announce the show moving to the "New York Metro Area", Somerset, N.J. which is way out of New York. The say this will increase the amount of people that can attend the show, but then they say they expect 20,000 visitors (Gee, they claimed higher figures than that at previous shows). They claim the exhibitors did not want to see the same faces each year as they claim they have in Boston each year, so the show has a new home (gee, don't the same faces appear yearly in San Francisco, and wouldn't the same faces show up each year in New Jersey?? I guess they don't want to see me face again either, I only bought 2 hard drives at one show, and about $700 worth of stuff at the other one).. Applefest will be combined on the same floor with ComputerFest. Isle 100 will be Apple only booths, 200-600 will be open for all comers, and starting at isle 700 will be only PC vendors.. Tickets for either show will be valid for both shows and conf. areas.. They say they are pushing to make "Applefest work to become the key NATIONAL SHOWCASE FOR MACINTOSH classroom applications now and into the nineties" ( is there a message there about Apple II participation??) They say this location will allow vendors to reach more "educator buyers and top quality home users" and "decision making educators and active, affluent home users". ( Gee, I guess they are not interested in getting any business users). They also claim hotel rates there are more than 30% less than Boston.. They might be right.. What visitor to New York stays near New Brunswick N.J.? One other important item.. They have changed the dates to May 4-6, 1990, that is a week earlier than announced so they would not conflict with the Apple Developers Conf. the following week in California.. Now here is the kicker!!!! They say at this time "we don't know whether, or how much Apple will be supporting the show". All of the above information was sent to me by Andy Calkins, the show director of the promoters, so you can take it as official.. Some of my thoughts!!! First Apple forces them to include Mac at Applefest, and ruin the only show Apple II folks had (Mac has several of it's own), and now Apple is not even sure if they will support the show.. which is being further watered down by the addition of IBM, Commodore, Atari etc.. Show Apple owners support the show?? The same show the promoters say they want to make the key national showcase for Macintosh???? What are your thoughts?? -- bsherman@mthvax.cs.miami.edu | bsherman@pro-exchange | MCI MAIL: BSHERMAN >> Miami's Big Apple - 305-948-8000 - 24 hours - 300/1200 - PCP'able << >> Oldest Apple support board in Southeast. ComputerFest? A name I heard being kicked around in an informal conference in the A2 section of GEnie last Tuesday (1/2/90) was "EduFest." This may be just an appellation for it thought up there, for want of a better name. Regardless, if this show turns out the way Bob Sherman writes, it will bear very little resemblance indeed to the APPLEFests of the past. I think EduFest was one of the things being kicked around, but the final word in the 5 pages they faxed to me seems to be ComputerFest... Each year I've been wanting to go to Applefest in Boston, but each time something came up and I had to give up any idea of going. Now that I've moved to Albany, NY (I used to live in Maryland), I was definitely going to attend this year, come hell or high water. My brother-in-law lives in Boston so I even had a place to stay. If worse came to worse, I could even make a day trip out of it if I had to since it would only be about a 3 hour drive (not bad compared to the 10 1/2 hour drive it would have been from Maryland). Now I find out its going to be in New Jersey. I'm really bummed. Ray P.S. - Where in New Jersey is it going to be again? How far is it from Philadelphia? It always makes your lives miserable. :) AppleFest is a registered trademark - of Apple Computer, Inc. Predicting that Apple would not allow use of the trademark for a computer show devoted exclusively to Apple computers is premature, at best. If AppleFest had been a registered trademark of Cambridge Marketing, I would bet that they'd be opposed to letting it be used in a show they didn't produce. It's not surprising that Apple is pusing the Mac into all areas with great vigor. I truly believe that Apple wants to be a one computer company and that computer is the Mac. I have had my GS for 3 years or so (original Woz flavor) and have seen no real hardware advances. Adding RAM is not a hardware advance. Updating toolsets is software. Anyway, it seems like every 6 months a new Mac has come out. There's no question in my mind where its leading to. I think in a few more years one all the II people have been weaned into GSs and the GSers into Macs, I will be a proud owner of an orphan, to sit next to my museum piece II+. I'm very dissapointed in Apple Co.
