[net.movies] Dune movie error SPOILER

myers@utcsrgv.UUCP (Brad A. Myers) (12/21/84)

I just reread the Dune book in preparation for seeing the movie, and
I noticed that at the very end of the book, where Paul is telling the
Emperor that he is taking over, along with the Emperor are two
*Guild Navigators*, which are humans with spice addiction and contact
lenses to hide it. I haven't seen the movie yet, but weren't the ugly
beasties the navigators in the movie? Someone said Herbert didn't
describe the navigators in the book, and this is not true.

P.S. The book is really great! With all these old great books on my
shelf, I don't know why I keep buying new trash.

In fact, there seem to be multiple "stages" of guild navigators. The
ugly beastie at the start of the movie was the third stage type. These
navigators are so addicted to spice that they must float in a tank of
it. They are described in one of the later books by Herbert, and the ones
in the movie seem to match the description pretty well. In the books, the
third stage navigators never saw fit to show themselves to mere humans,
until their spice supply began to get cut off, when they had to take
drastic measures. In the movie, there are also two of the more human
looking navigators at the end.
