[comp.sys.apple] Battlechess nightmare

TSEMM@ALASKA.BITNET ("Ed 'Apple Guru' Moore") (02/11/90)

I am trying to play Battlechess on a gs computer over the phone line.
However, both of us have Datalink 2400 modems rather than a external
connected to a SSC. We can connect and send messages, but the moves
do not work. HELP!!!!!! We have also tried connecting then going
into battlechess still connected, with worse results. HELP US!!!!

I believe that the DataLink has a SSC/External Modem emulation mode, give that
a try....if just might work.

The DataLink should work the same as an external connected to an SSC. I also
have a DataLink 2400. I tell ProTERM that I have an Apple SSC and Hayes
Smartmodem 2400. I have no problems with this. You might try this setting
with your game.

I've never heard of the DataLink having an External Modem emulation. There
is nothing in the books about it. It is Hayes compatable, but I don't
think it is compleatly SSC compatable.

Its not really that it emulates a SSC, it just has some settings that make it
look like a SSC (and External Modem) to applications that would prefer that
configuration.

RE: Datalink 2400 as external modem

The datalink 2400 DOES act just like a 2400 baud external modem connected
to a super serial card for most purposes. In fact, the fact that it is
SSC compatible is the reason I bought it -- I use it daily for banking at
home via modem and while the bank supports the Apple II line, it does not
have GS support and does NOT support the built-in com port.

I also have battlechess and although I have not tried communicating with
it, I believe the manual indicated that it ONLY SUPPORTS 300 BAUD. Check
the manual -- if this is true, make sure you set the Datalink to 300 baud.

Hope this helps.

The point is it Battlechess isn't quite working. The program changes the
setings, but when I put in a move, the receiving end gets teh character in a mes
sage
rather than as a chess move! Any help?
