[comp.sys.apple] IIGS novice

mitchell@tci.bell-atl.com (Rob Mitchell) (02/13/90)

Hello IIGSers,

BACKGROUND:

My cousin-in-law, who is 12 years old, is the proud owner of a
IIGS for the past three years or so. The first year: it sat in a box.
The second year: the power switch was turned on once or twice. This
year: I finally recommended some "good" software for him to use.

I'm a Mac person, not a IIGS person, but I'm trying.

PROBLEMS:

[1] I don't think he ever mailed in his registration/ownership
card. Does Apple send out free ROM upgrades? (I know Apple
	doesn't handout free anything, but ... :)

[2] I've never looked inside the IIGS box, but what do I look
for when I want to see what version ROM he has? (I believe he
has the original ROM v1.0 or something.)

[3] I believe he has something called a "super serial card" which
is used (I think) for the monitor. Can someone shed light here?

[4] How can I find out how much memory he has? Is this related
to the "super serial card?" Does memory plug in like the Macs
	do (ie. DIP SIMMS)?l

CLOSING:

	Thanks in advance!!!!

Turn it on. If it is 3 years old, it's either a ROM 0 or a ROM 1 machine.
If it's a ROM 01 Machine, it'll say ROM 01 at the bottom (I think) of the
screen at bootup time.

GS Monitors just plug right into the back, into one of the ports. I think
it has a picture of a TV screen over top of it... Hold on... Sorry, I just
looked. Underneath, not above.

A Super Serial Card has 2 uses, either connecting a printer to the GS (or
any other // for that matter) or connecting a modem to the machine. You must
be able to find some sort of literature on how to hook it up. I have no idea,
I use the built in ports.

Now, this one IS tricky. Turn the computer on. Simultaniously press <CONTROL>-
<Open-Apple>-<ESC>. Highlight CONTROL PANEL with the arrows and press <RETURN>.
Highlight RAM DISK. Press <RETURN>. Add up the 2 bottom numbers. This is close
to the amount of memory. (It may not come out exactly due to the funny way some
of the software and firmware is written, but round it to the closest 1/4 Meg. a
and you'll be right I think.)

I guess I'm missing the humor here, but as far as I can tell the upgrade
from ROM 0 to ROM 1 is still free. (ROM 0 just says "Apple IIgs" on the
screen when you turn on the power, but ROM 1 says "ROM Version 01" at the
bottom of the screen.)

Here is the notice your dealer can find on AppleLink.
**********
VIDEO GRAPHICS CONTROLLER AND ROM UPGRADE--OLR853
(Announced August 87)

A new Video Graphics Controller chip and a new ROM are available from Apple
Service to upgrade your installed base of Apple IIGS systems and service stock.
The new Video Graphics Controller (VGC) corrects video display problems that
may occur in double high resolution and standard text mode. The new ROM
corrects minor bugs and provides enhancements for future software releases.

Units produced through mid January 1987 have VGCs and ROMs that should be
replaced. All units produced from mid January through mid June 1987 should
have only the ROM replaced. Customers should have both upgrades performed at
the same time if required.

Identify which units need to be upgraded, check the first three numeric
characters of the serial number on the bottom of the unit. Units with 703 and
below need both the new VGC and the ROM. Units with serial numbers between 704
and 724, inclusive, need the ROM. Units with serial numbers of 725 or higher
do not require either of these upgrades.

To obtain Labor and Parts Credit reimbursement for this procedure, (Parts
Margin will not be paid) do the following: Return the customer's down level
VGC and/or ROM to Apple and record the VGC and/or ROM part numbers on the SRO
form. In addition, record the repair extension authorization code "OLR853"
in the Warranty Information section. Because the installed base requires
either a VGC and ROM upgrade or a ROM only upgrade, labor reimbursement for
either upgrade will be issued for the ROM part number. Therefore, on the SRO
you must list the ROM part number first to obtain labor reimbursement. Also,
note that the VGC part number is different from other Apple part numbers. The
first three numbers are followed by an "S" instead of a "-" . Be sure that
your SRO states this part number correctly.

Sorry about that, but since all the furor that went on when apple
released the ROM 3 without an upgrade, I was thinking about that. I
I forgot that on occasion Apple DOES help out the customers. BTW, is that
offer still valid? A friend of mine tried to upgrade a ROM 0 to a ROM 1
last year (around June), and the dealer said that it was no longer
available... (What's this? I'm trusting dealers?)

On of the few things that Apple still works on for the II.

Maybe things should be changed at Apple so that DTS IS in charge...

yes that offer is stil valid. this last december at computer land, they
were still offering it. although your dealer might no longer know about it
since apple has not reannounced it.

Yes, it seems to still be valid--tell your dealer to look up OLR853 in
the Service Programs (I think) icon on AppleLink. (That'll get it for
sure...you can also use "GS AND ROM" and get about 8 items, one of which
contains the ROM 01/VGC upgrade bulletin.)
