[comp.sys.apple] Quickie

Well, I bought the Quickie hand scanner. It's pretty nice; if you're familiar
with the hand scanners for IBM computers, you know almost everything there is
to know about it; they are virtually identical. Of course, there is GS
specific software for it. It comes with the program, and an NDA that you
place in the Finder, or your favorite paint program (as long as that program
isn't Paintworks Gold -- for some reason it doesn't like that one). It seems
to work fine in Appleworks GS, however.

What's really neat is you boot up your Paint Program, then pull down the NDA,
scan the picture (or whatever); send it to the clipboard; then go to your
paint program and paste it right in.

Output is in 400. 300, 200 and 100 dpi... though I seem to be using 300 and
400 for mostly everything. At 300 dpi you can see the picture while you scan.
There are plenty of other controls, you darken it, change the contrast;
there's a few other things, but unfortunately I don't have the manual yet so
I'm winging it.

It's very convenient to use. You just push the button (more or less). The
width of the scan is about 4 inches, the length you can set in the software.
There is a built-in cropping tool, so you can crop it before you save it.
There are four save formats; PNT, PIC and Apple Preferred (and maybe another
one... I can't remember).

I'm still playing with it... but I like it so far. Oh, it asks if you want
it black and white, or grey scale....

Nice to see a new product for the GS coming out in these exasperating times.

The "Quickie" is made by Vitesse; and their ad is in the current Incider
magazine. It's $299.
