[comp.sys.apple] MFM Formating

re4@prism.gatech.EDU (RUSSELL EARNEST) (02/22/90)

n the Mac SE Owner's Guide (p. 33) it strongly implies that a 1.4 MB disk
formated on a FDHD drive will be compatable with the same MFM format of IBM
formating. I tried it both ways, in each case the respective machines spit the
offending disks out before any operations were attempted.

Obviously I'm missing something. What?

(And yes, I am comming from the IBM world but I'm now in a 50/50 shop and am
building a network to happly include everyone.)

THanks for the help,

You're missing a couple of things.

A) Comp.sys.apple is for the Apple II line of computers. If you have
questions on Macintosh technology, the comp.sys.mac group of newsgroups will
be the place to get them answered.

B) An MFM-formatted disk does not mean that the MS-DOS file system is on it,
which is a necessary prerequisite for use in MS-DOS machines. If you format
it in the Macintosh Finder, it will put the Macintosh file system (HFS) on the
disk. Use the Apple File Exchange program to format an MS-DOS disk on the
Macintosh.

(in other words, it can read the disk but can't find files on it.)
