I believe that the carousel spins on a fore-aft axis, with the pod bay and bridge forward (away from the engines) of it. I would put HAL aft (toward the engines) of the carousel, myself. The pictures show the bridge above (if the antenna is "up") the pod bay, with their decks "horizontal". Note that the book of 2001 gives the carousel spinning on a vertical axis, occupying the space between the "tropic of cancer" and the "tropic of capricorn" (Clarke's terminology). -peter (Hit the "N" key, Scotty.
