Thanks to Matt Deatherage and Apple Customer Support, I found out that I had just encountered a dealer that didn't know what was going on. The dealer had informed me that, for ANY Apple computer, opening the case, having a 3rd party card, or having an Apple card that wasn't installed by a dealer, will void AppleCare and the initial Apple warranty. Apple Customer Support told me this was incorrect. On a IIGS/e/+, you are allowed to open the case and install ANY card youself. However, the warranty will not cover any mods made to the covered equipment or any repairs needed if it is determined that the damage was caused by the user, a card, etc. You are not allowed to open a compact Mac (128/512e/+/SE/se30). Following the same logic about open/closed systems, I'd assume that you aren't allowed to open a IIc/c+, but are allowed to open a Mac II; however, I didn't ask since I don't own one or plan to. If you own one, don't take my word on it, call Apple Customer Support at (408) 252-APPL to find out for sure. The other dealer that had kept my original system disks also cleared up my problems, and arranged for new ones to be sent to me. Apple's customer support is still there, and I really appreciate it. They're still listening and still care. I'm still going to patronize Apple, just not the misinformed dealer. ******************************************************************************* * c60c-3cw@web-3a.berkeley.edu * * * kelton@ocf.berkeley.edu * THIS SPACE FOR RENT * * Allen Kelton * * *******************************************************************************
