[comp.sys.apple] SCRIPTING I GUESS

RXBROWN@UALR.BITNET ("MR.FANTASTIC") (03/12/90)

Man this rumor stuff is hard on your nerves. Well what I want to ask is this:
I want to d/load files from my local bbs in a batch mode, but this bbs does
not have a batch mode. A friend of mine has a scripting language on his Amiga
and I was wondering if one existed for the GS (I don't think so but I thought
I would at least ask).

If no scripting language what about using EXEC file? I have ORCA/C, I wonder
if that would work. What about the shell programs that are out? I want to
run Kermit or something else. I need it to send the commands to get to the
d/load section, then I need to give it the file name, then I need to tell
it which protocol I am using. When it is done I need to do the same thing
to d/load the next file.

My thoughts: Write a program <-- Don't have toolbox mans. yet.
Text file <-- Not quite sure how to implement on the GS.
Orca desktop <-- have not had time to look at closely.
Shell program <-- Don't use them. Is anyone doing this.
HyperStudio <-- Don't have but maybe.

Well that all I can think of right now. Its 8:29 a.m, I just got off work at
6:30 a.m. I wish I could go home and sleep, but I have class from 10 - 1.
Any ideas, suggestions, comments? Maybe we develope a scripting language fro
the GS. This would be great! Say you just d/loaded 27 files, like I usually
do from my account, and you want to use Binscii to convert them and then
unshrink them. You could set up a script then have it read a file that con-
tains all the files you want to work with. Have it give the file names to
Binscii as it finishes converting each one, them run Shrinkit and give it the
shrunk file and a destination path to write them out to. This is just one
example there are probably many others. It could do things based on time, or
maybe you need to boot your machine, but you don't want all the bells and
whistles(sp?). You could have it ask you if you want a long or short boot,
and depending on what you answer it would execute the correct startup. These
are just a few ideas that could be implemented with such a tool.

I use the Talk Is Cheap communications program and I can very easily
do batch tranfers. TIC allows you to very easily write command files
for execution as keyboard macros. One of the command files that I
have written is a Y-modem batch tranfer routine that I use with
my local bulletin boards (all are IBM based).

I use an old version of TIC that I got when it was Shareware
however I have been told that It is no longer shareware.
(is this true)

BTW: Has anyone ever heard of BIMODEM tranfer for the
Apple. If it exists I WANT IT!
