[comp.sys.apple] SCSI Question

lwv@n8emr.UUCP (Larry W. Virden) (06/19/88)

Hi! I am thinking (wishing :-)) for a SCSI hard disk. I have seen controllers
from Apple, CMS, those sider folks, and I think some place in England. any
one know of any others? Also, I see in msgs over in those OTHER
areas items about MFM and RLL - which is used for Apple SCSI?
Thanks

MFM or RLL is a feature of the disk drive used, independent of the
interface between computer and the disk controller electronics. There
can be several interfaces in between you and the disk platters.

Typical SCSI setups around here use the following:

Computer
 SCSI interface
   | (SCSI BUS)
SCSI Native disk interface controller (Adaptec ACB 4000, for example)
   | (St506/St412 interface)
 Disk Drive & low-level electronics

Can someone direct me to a book that explains the SCSI standard (ANSI
x3t9.282-2) and the SCSI interface (hardware).

I am planning to install a SCSI Hard Drive on my GS and I wounder if I
could use one of those Mac advertised HD on my GS with the Apple SCSI card. I
am not sure about how compatible the Apple SCSI card is with the Macs SCSI port
I would like to use one of thos Mac HD since they are a lot cheapper than the
ones advertised for the Apple II family. Is there any compability problem?
Can this be done?

Thanks in advance for you help,
                           Rafael...

As far as I know, any Mac SCSI (external) should work with an Apple SCSI card
although you may have to use one of the formatting programs archived on
Apple2-L and other places.

I've used a generic Mac SCSI drive (ordered from HDI) and been pleased with
it.
