[net.movies] Dino's films

All this talk about how good/bad Dune was got me to thinking.
Just what movies has Dino De Larentis produced? I came up
with:

The infamous 'King Kong' remake
Flash Gordon (Fegh)
Orca the Killer Whale (Didn't see it. Jaws rip off?)
Conan (??)

What others? Were they all bombs? If so, where in hell did
he get all that money?

Didn't he also make that great 1960's cult film "Barbarella", starring then
a VERY young/good-looking Jane Fonda??? Definitely a must-see!!!

There was also a western ``The Renegade,'' (?) c. 1972. Cast included
Chuck Conners. The `renegade' was a soldier who adopted native ways to
avenge brutally depicted (for '72) rape/murder of his wife by Injuns.
Conners was a cigar-chomping/dynamite-throwing gang member. Violent.
Pandering. Tasteless. The dubbing was bad too--lead played by an
Italian who grunted a lot, out of sync.

``This is awful,'' I thought, ``I hope this guy doesn't get anything
else released here.'' The rest is history.

Try LA STRADA and RAGTIME for starters. (I'll try to send more when I get to my
sources.)

An oldie (late 60's), but goodie of Dino's was "Barbarella"
with Jane Fonda. I saw it two weeks ago. It is still amusing.

A Dino De Laurentiis filmography would be a bit too long to include in toto.
He produced a lot of Italian films in the late 40s and the 50s, before moving
to international production. Here are some highlights and lowlights.

"Bitter Rice" 1948
"Ulysses" 1953
"La Strada" 1953
"War and Peace" 1956 (his first English language film)
"Nights of Cabiria" 1956
"Barabbas" 1961
"The Bible" 1966
"Anzio" 1968
"Barbarella" 1968
"Waterloo" 1970
"The Valachi Papers" 1972
"The Stone Killer" 1973
"Serpico" 1973
"Death Wish" 1974
"Casanova" 1974
"Three Days of the Condor" 1975
"Mandingo" 1975
"Drum" 1976
"King Kong" 1976
"Orca" 1977
"The White Buffalo" 1977
"The Serpent's Egg" 1977
(1977 was a bad year for poor Dino. Even Ingmar Bergman failed him.)
"Hurricane" 1978
"The Brinks Job" 1978
"King of the Gypsies" 1978

The above is from Katz's "Film Encyclopedia". In some cases, he was
executive producer.

He's had a few hits, and I suppose that if he is a clever enough producer,
almost all the profits go back to him. None the less, I too have to wonder
where he gets the money to throw away over $20 million each on "King Kong"
and "Hurricane", not to mention his monumental probably losses on "Dune".

One thing i noticed (and could hardly stop laughing at) was the name of
the villian in this film: Duran Duran. This wouldn't happen to be where
that god-awful-hideous-no_talent-think-of-your-own-insult rock group got
their name, would it? Anybody know?

Yes, of course. (Duran)**2 stole their name from Dino.

How sad.
