<comdisco@cae780.TEK.COM>'s question about 'char' has injected a lot of fairly useless bandwidth into the group in the form of reposted quotes of his whole posting, BUT I think it's worth finding out about. I *mailed* my reply, hoping to avoid just what happened. If other quasi-trivia questions come up, maybe the poster should offer to summarize for the net? Simpler idea than finding a floating handle, eh? "It looks like a thermopod, but it's a very bad design" -another from Buckaroo Banzaii -- Ted Swift (well!tswift) "Why is there watermelon there?" While we are wasting time on the correct pronunciation of "char", we should also worry about the pronunciations of "bin" and "lib". Both of these should be pronounced with a long i sound, since they were derived from binary and library.

The pronunciation wars over "char" and "*" were bad enough. I say "bin" should be pronounced "dwat" and "lib" should be pronounced "frutz". And the word "snap" should clearly be pronounced "schnapp" since it is obviously a derivative of the Middle Low German word "snappen" which is pronounced "schnappen". Seriously, folks, stop it. I say "tomato" and you say "tomato". Let's call the whole thing off. -- Raymond Chen UUCP: ...allegra!princeton!{pucc|phoenix}!rjchen BITNET: 6101695@pucc, rjchen@pucc ARPA: rjchen@pucc.PRINCETON.EDU "Say something, please!
