[comp.lang.misc] Want info on Beta language

robison@uiucdcsb.cs.uiuc.edu (02/10/88)

In the January 1988 SIGPLAN notices there are references to a language called
``Beta.'' Anyone know where I can find out more?

If Beta is the language done by the Simula crowd, a further description is in
the new object oriented programming book published by MIT press (I think
Wegner is the first editor).

I knew I had seen a talk on this once, and a search of conference
proceedings uncovered:

"Abstraction mechanisms in the Beta programming language,"
  Kristensen, Madsen, Moller-Pederson, and Nygaard,
  10th POPL (Austin), 1983, pp. 285-298.

Currently the main source to Beta is in:

Research Directions in Object Oriented Programming.
Edited by B.D. Shriver and P. Wegner.
MIT PRESS, 1987.

Also in that book is a paper by Ole L. Madsen on the use of block
structure in object oriented languages which are quite good.

They also had a paper or two on the Hawaii conference this year, on
how they are building a integrated envirronment for the Beta language.

I was so fortunate to get my Masters degree under supervision on Ole,
one of the four behind the project. Even though it was a somewhat
enfantile version of the compiler we had to deal with it was a great
improvement over many other languages I have seen.

Hope this is a help - otherwise just feel free to send me mail, or
I can find the address of the people for you.

/Kasper
