CALL FOR PAPERS AND REFEREES HAWAII INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON SYSTEM SCIENCES - 22 LANGUAGES FOR PARALLEL PROCESSING KAILUA-KONA, HAWAII - JANUARY 3-6, 1989 The Software Track of HICSS-22 will contain a special set of papers focusing on a broad selection of topics in the area of Languages for Parallel Processing. One of the major problems in parallel processing is the problem of expressing an algorithm in parallel form. There are two broad ap- proaches being proposed by various researchers: Implicit Control and Explicit Control. These two approaches have im- pacted the design of programming languages and tools. Implicit Control languages are usually designed to hide the parallel processing from the programmer, e.g. functional and logic programming languages, vectorizing FORTRAN compilers, etc. This poses a major problem for compiler writers because of the difficulty of automatic parallel detection and opti- mization. Explicit Control languages usually extend an existing lan- guage, or are designed as parallel processing languages, e.g. OCCAM. A major difficulty here is in the design of the language -- how can it be general enough to encompass all forms of parallelism, and how can it avoid machine dependen- cies? Can the programmer extend his application from a few processors to a large number without altering his applica- tion significantly. In this session, we want to explore the many ways of designing and implementing languages for paral- lel processing. Papers are invited that may be theoretical, conceptual, tu- torial or descriptive in nature. Those papers selected for presentation will appear in the Conference Proceedings which is published by the Computer Society of the IEEE. HICSS-22 is sponsored by the University of Hawaii in cooper- ation with the ACM, the Computer Society, and the Pacific Research Institute for Information Systems and Management (PRIISM). Submissions are solicited in: o Restructuring translators o Parallel optimizing compilers o Design of new languages for parallel programming o Visual and other paradigms for parallel programming o Debugging applications in parallel languages o Performance studies for parallel languages o Performance tuning in parallel languages o Special-purpose languages for systolic, distrib- uted, or novel architectures o Practical experiences with language constructs, compilers, etc. INSTRUCTIONS FOR SUBMITTING PAPERS Manuscripts should be 22-26 typewritten, double-spaced pages in length. Do not send submissions that are significantly shorter or longer than this. Papers must not have been previously presented or published, nor currently submitted for journal publication. Each manuscript will be put through a rigorous refereeing process. Manuscripts paper should have a title page that includes the title of the pa- per, full name of its author(s), affiliation(s), complete physical and electronic address(es), telephone number(s) and a 300-word abstract of the paper. DEADLINES o A 300-word abstract is due by March 30, 1988 o Feedback to author concerning abstract by April 15, 1988 o Six copies of the manuscript are due by June 6, 1988. o Notification of accepted papers by September 1, 1988. o Accepted manuscripts, camera-ready, are due by Oc- tober 3, 1988.
