[comp.lang.misc] comparison of various languages

chittur@cb.ecn.purdue.edu (Venkatesh K Chittur) (11/01/88)

Can someone recommend some good book(s) where
I can get comparisons of the various features
of different languages? Of course, I realize it
may not have complete descriptions of all of them,
but just the features that are common/not common.
Please mail me your suggestions; I'll summarize.
Thanks in advance.

I had asked this question:

You might try a book by MacLennan, _Principles_Of_Programmin_Languages_, if
you want an overview of the different types of programming languages. It
contains a good deal of stuff on imperative, functional, and logic programming
languages, plus some stuff on object oriented programmming.

However, it's not good if you want just the differences between certain
"standard" imperative languages (such as C, Fortrash, Cobol, Pascal, Ada,
etc...). It's more for paradigms of programming.

principles of programming languages; design, evaluation, and implementation,
bruce j. maclennan; hold, rinehart & winston: new york, 1987. goes thru the
generations (as the author sees it) of programming languages, pointing out
salient features/strengths/weaknesses/similarities of each

Well, first there is a collection of papers that deal with C,
Pascal and Ada, published in a book form. I believe the title was
"Comparing and Assessing Programming Languages: C, Pascal and Ada".
The editors are Alan Feuer and Narain Gehani. I believe the publisher
is Prentice-Hall (my copy is at home).

An excellent text on programming languages in general, that
includes studying various languages is Terrence W. Pratt's
"Programming Languages: Design and Implementation", 2nd Edition.
The publisher is Prentice-Hall.

One other person mentioned that they offer a course
at Purdue that deals with the subject.

Thanks to all who responded.
