For a paper for a graduate course I am taking, I would like a reference to an old topic: Once upon a time, industry gurus pontificated on the issue of whether using high-level languages was a good idea, because hand-coded assembly language was usually more efficient in run-time (the younger generation may find this hard to believe, but 'tis true). I would like citations to articles in this category. E-mail please, unless everybody thinks they would like a good laugh.
