Will put the facts first and meta-ramblings second: I've recently written another paper, ``Functional Programming in an Object Oriented Language'', that expands on my earlier posting here about the relationship between functional and object oriented languages. If you would like the LaTex source e-mailed to you drop me a note. If you can't process latex, send a paper mail address and I will send a copy when it finally comes out as an official TR. Now for the meta comments. You may recall I announced another paper (on generalized arithmetic in C++) in a similar manner a couple of weeks ago. The response to that was great, with over 50 requests for the paper. Are other authors out their interested in distributing papers in this fashion? What do other folks (not necessarily authors) think of the idea. I hesitated about posting the source itself for fear of getting flamed not only about the format but about the size. My choices were to (1) announce the paper and respond with the text by mail (which I did), (2) announce the paper and make it available by ftp (seems overkill for such a transient thing), or (3) post the article in Latex source. I think the latter would be great, but don't want to take action on my own. My vision would be something like an electronic equivalent of a journal to which individuals could submit papers and get fast feedback. Of course, I don't think you could list this on your vita, but then again ``publication'' here wouldn't prevent you from later submitting a revised version of the paper to a real journal (as I am doing with both the papers I've described). I had hoped that comp.tecreports would be something like this, but it isn't. So - would folks like to see complete articles posted ? where? in this newsgroup, or somewhere else? How about announcements here, and sources in some other newsgroup? --tim budd budd@cs.orst.edu
