[comp.lang.misc] Papers in comp.doc

budd@mist.CS.ORST.EDU (Tim Budd) (06/30/89)

Following my recent questions about the posting of papers to the net,
somebody suggested that the appropriate newsgroup already existed,
namely comp.doc. As an experiment, I've posted both the papers I recently
advertised in this newsgroup to comp.doc. If this is successful (that is,
if people receive them and I don't get flamed too badly), I will continue
and I would strongly encourage others to do likewise. The sense
of the remarks I received seemed to indicate that the proper protocol
would be to post a short announcement, maybe even an abstract, in
the newsgroup of interest (say this one), and the complete paper in
comp.doc.

Let me reiterate that I view this as sort of the literary equivalent of
beta testing; this isn't publication really, but rather a way of getting
ideas quickly disseminated and feedback that can (if desired) be used in a
later, more polished version of the paper submitted to a ``real'' journal.
