------ Probably appearing for umpteenth time. Sorry. I need to know titles and release years of PP movies with Sellers. Also, about 2 year ago David Niven played the inspector - I would appreciate a mini-review (comparison with Sellers' stuff might be the best way to measure). thanks Mike Cherepov

David Niven did not play Clouseau. He played the Phantom, a cat burglar, in "The Pink Panther" and "The Trail of the Pink Panther" (or maybe it was "The Curse of the Pink Panther"; they're too recent for my references). Now, Roger Moore did appear as Clouseau in the latter film, unbilled. Alan Arkin also appeared once as Clouseau in "Inspector Clouseau" in 1968. By all accounts, the film wasn't very good. -- Peter Reiher reiher@ucla-cs.arpa {...ihnp4,ucbvax,sdcrdcf}!ucla-cs!reiher

You may be thinking of the James Bond spoof, where Niven was supposed to be the real 007. I've forgotten the name of the movie tho... -- James Steven Carrington jsc@berkeley.arpa ucbvax!jsc

David Niven was the jewel thief. The "Pink Panther" was the diamond.

The spy "spoof" starring David Niven as the genuine 007, and also starring a wide variety of other top names including Peter Sellers and Woody Allen, is "Casino Royale." This film is on my top ten favorite film list. I may bring a copy to the next Usenix conference where I hope to throw another of my evening film fests. --Lauren--

> David Niven was the "Pink Panther" (the jewel thief) in the original movie. Uhh... the Pink Panther was the *jewel* in the original movie; you were supposed to be able to see a pink panther in the jewel if you looked at it in the right light at the right angle. > You may be thinking of the James Bond spoof, where Niven was supposed to > be the real 007. I've forgotten the name of the movie tho... "Casino Royale". (Any similarity to the plot of any novel written by anyone named Ian Fleming, living or dead, is coincidental.) David Niven was one of the principals in "The Pink Panther", which was made some time in the early 1960's. Peter Sellers played Clouseau in this movie. It is interesting to note that the later films associated the name "Pink Panther" with Clouseau himself, when it really was the title for the famous diamond which was stolen in "The Pink Panther" and "The Return of the Pink Panther," as well as a nickname for the famous jewel thief. Also, I am surprised that the movie "A Shot in the Dark" gets comparatively little attention from the newsgroup; it is a hilarious 1965 film which followed the further adventures of Jacques Clouseau and which again starred Sellers in the lead role. As far as I know, the only people to play Clouseau were Sellers and Alan Arkin ("Inspector Clouseau"). Jim Campbell

> > David Niven was the "Pink Panther" (the jewel thief) in the original movie. > > Uhh... the Pink Panther was the *jewel* in the original movie; you were > supposed to be able to see a pink panther in the jewel if you looked at > it in the right ... The thief's nickname (at some point Sellers says: "... the notorious `Phantom'..."; hard to catch because of Clouseau's accent) begins with "P" as well, so everybody assumes that the monogram on the white glove, Phantom's trademark, stands for "Pink Panther". This is the source of confusion. BTW, the thief was also played by Christopher Plummer. Someone also mentioned "Shot in the Dark" (?), which was the _first_ Clouseau movie with all the works (Insp. Dreyfuss, Cato etc.) but no relation with the later "Pink Panther" plots. E.J. Behr, UCSD (sdcc6!ix654)
