The movie 'The Hunger' was a very strange (and slightly disturbing) horror show. Very powerful but subtle scenes kept the audience interested (mostly at the edge of their seats). The first part of the show set the pace and tone for the rest of it, in the opening scene there are three things happanening (constant cuts to a different scene): (1) David Bowie and (what was her name???) pick up a couple (of victims) (2) Two monkeys in a cage get a little agravated and one tears the other apart. (3) The group at the bar play a tune with a very heavy base line and mostly indistinguishable lyrics (apart from a key phrase 'UNDEAD, UNDEAD, UNDEAD'). The song I found the most interesting, every time I saw the movie I tried to figure out what those mysterious other lyrics were. I gave up after a while (you can only see a movie so many times, even on VCR) but the other day radio came to the rescue and I now know what the words are but don't know who does it or where I can get it (ie. is it an import). If you thought it was a contrived tune, think again it's about Bela Lugosi! White on white, Translucent black capes, back on the rack. Bela Lugosi's dead. The bats have left the bell tower . The victims have been bled. Red velvet lines the black box. Bela Lugosi's dead Bela Lugosi's dead Undead, undead, undead Undead, undead, undead The virginal brides file past his tomb. Soon will times dear flowers be wrapped in deathly gloom. Alone in a darkened room.. THE COUNT. Bela Lugosi's dead Bela Lugosi's dead Bela Lugosi's dead Undead, undead, undead Undead, undead, undead Undead, undead, undead __________________________ Barry Rosetti ..!watrose!berosetti

The song is "Bela Lugosi is Dead", by Bauhaus. Bauhaus broke up a few years ago. I've been looking up the soundtrack for The Hunger to find out what song they were playing, but strangely enough it's not included. Bauhaus' music is wonderful, gritty stuff, sometimes obsessed with death and destruction. I have three of their albums: In the Flat Field, The Sky's Gone Out and Burning From the Inside, all of which I enjoy immensely. Bela Lugosi is Dead is on "Press the Eject and Give me the Tape" and, I think, "Mask". I once posted a Bauhaus query a while ago. Nice to be able to volunteer the information... Bill Hsu pur-ee!hsut

The song from the intro to "The Hunger" is "Bela Lugosi's Dead" by Bauhaus. It's a great song but, unfortunately, it's very hard to find. There are two recorded versions of the song: one live and one studio. I'm not sure which one was used in the movie, but I know that the live version is vastly superior to the studio version. The live version is on the LP "Press The Eject And Give Me The Tape", which is only available as an import here in Canada and probably in the U.S. as well. I don't think the studio version is available on any album (I think it pre-dates their first album), but it's available here on an import 12" single. Somebody else said that it was on "Mask", but I know that's not true because I have "Mask". -- Jeff Richardson, DCIEM, Toronto (416) 635-2073 {linus,ihnp4,uw-beaver,floyd}!utcsrgv!dciem!jeff {allegra,ihnp4,linus,decvax}!utzoo!dciem!jeff
