Many thanks to the 30 or so people who have sent replies for the "language list" If others tried without success, my more fully qualified alias is: tomr@ashtate.A-T.com I am sorry that our router or sender apparently chops off the final part, as a number of respondents pointed out. I intend to begin e-mailing out "as is" long version copies later this week in two c. 40K pieces. (The delay is so that I can first add all the new entries to it.) There has been minor debate/discussion over the inclusion of some "brands" of languages (such as "Turbo Pascal"), as well as ALGOL 58 and ALGOL 60 but not C++ 1.0 and C++ 2.0, etc. These are valid points. As far as including some brands, many specific implementations of a language (especially the Borland "Turbo" series) offer optional non-standard extensions. For example, Turbo C has a command line switch that will allow nested comments in C. Technically, this could be considered a dialect of C. (Of course, due in part to bugs, some claim that every compiler should be considered as defining a different language.) I have no clear rule for this - for now, when it doubt, an entry will be included. Regarding numbered versions of languages, this was my oversight. I will now try to include major numbered releases or versions of a particular language after that entry. I suppose eventually the various FORTRAN or COBOL versions should be consolidated into their "main" entries. However, for the "paragraph" version, they will be included so that people that know of versions that are missing will possibly add them. Finally, the "paragraph" was intentionally _not_ posted to either alt.computers.folklore or comp.misc in order to keep the volume of responses to a reasonable level. I do intend to post updated versions of the paragraph to those groups in that order within the next month or so. Once those responses have been added, I will consider the first draft of the language list to be completed, and will attempt to pass its maintenance off to other(s) who may be interested. I do not think it would be appropriate to archive it or periodically post it somewhere in its current somewhat raw state. Thanks again for the enthusiastic support....
