tomr@dbase.A-T.COM (Tom Rombouts) (03/01/91)
Many of you may remember the "list of over 500 language" posting of several weeks ago. I am pleased to say that nearly 50 people responded, and I now have a "raw" list of c. 900 langauges and versions of languages. It is alphabetical by name, with no attempt at classification of any sort. Total size is c. 90K. However, my current employment situation does not really permit me to put the effort needed into maintaining this well. (I envision it someday evolving into something akin to the "jargon" file, with numbered versions and periodic postings.) Thus, here is my plan, unless people from this group e-mail too many objections: I would like to post the list in three c. 30K pieces to comp.lang.misc in about one week. This way, it can at least get out into the world, and the first massive wave of corrections and additions can begin. I will continue to save any additional entries that are e-mailed to me, but can not guarantee they will be added in a very timely manner. I will post a notice of the list to comp.misc as well as alt.computers.folklore. (Perhaps the entire thing should be posted to a.c.f., but I know that will result in a flood of responses.) If people in this somewhat scholarly group object to this fairly rough version being posted, please let me know. Also, if anyone, perhaps at an educational site, has a burning desire to become the official guardian of this list, that would be fine with me. (But I would still like to participate in the maintenance of the list.) Thanks again to everyone who responded. (BTW, this is a bit off the track, but I personally believe that once a greater percentage of people are wired together, collective documents such as this could really change the way we view publishing. I belived Ted Nelson's Xanadu project envisions something along these lines, but that is another thread in another newsgroup....) Tom Rombouts Torrance 'Tater tomr@ashtate.A-T.com V:(213)538-7108
