(state of shock???)
I just want to throw in a few comments on a few of the articles in this news-
group.
In the mid-70's I discovered that the records sounded faster on the radio than
on my record player. From playing sheet music of popular songs and transposing
it up one half-step (from C to C sharp, for instance), I found that the music
became the same pitch as that which I heard on the radio. Later, when I got
an adjustable speed turntable, I speeded it up so that I could play records and
have them sound as if they were on the radio. This came out to about 48 rpm
for singles.
I think this is done to make the music sound brighter, basically. Another
curious discovery made in college is that when I was drunk, normal speed music
sounded speeded up. Maybe that has something to do with why music is speeded
up? I prefer faster music myself, and still have my turntable set faster,
although I don't pay attention to which stations speed up their music or not.
About the new Jacksons/Jagger song, "State of Shock" is the name, (flame) and
I personally believe that it is the worst piece of "music" that either has been
involved in for some time. I haven't enjoyed much of the Stones music since
"Some Girls", and I need say no more about MJ :-), but this record far exceeded
my worst fears. It's nothing but noise, moaning, not much instrumentation,
very repetitive. I can't believe we've waited all these months for this.
It's not that the Jacksons can't produce good music -- the Jermaine and Michael
song "Tell Me I'm Not Dreaming" is what I expected the first Jacksons' re-
union single to sound like, not like this piece of garbage!
Enough flaming for today.
