After seeing BLOOD SIMPLE tonight, I think it would be best to describe this as an approximately 2 hour long Shaggy Dog Story, i.e. a dilly of a story all leading up to a punchline. Is it suspense? Well, in the way Hitchcock made suspense movies; this movie reinforced the fact that other director's suspense movies tend to be something quite different. Is it funny? Yes, but in a very black humor, and... oh, well, the main point is, I think this film has been over-hyped. It is a good film, with an excellent plot and superb (and I do mean the last adjective, especially considering the budget of this film) cinematography. But it did not leave me "breathless", or raving, or anything that strong. Don't get me wrong, this is worth $5, easy, and I think it's worth a second showing, but it doesn't go above the very good line for me. I'm afraid THE STUNT MAN is the ruler I must use to measure a film of this type, and it doesn't make it, though it gives a good try. Perhaps if I liked Hitchcock films more... "Calling J-Man Kink. Calling J-Man Kink. Hash missle sighted, target Los Angeles. Disregard personal feelings about city and intercept." Moriarty, aka Jeff Meyer John Fluke Mfg. Co., Inc.
