[comp.lang.apl] experience with APL2 for the PC?

jeff@trillian.uchicago.edu (04/07/89)

Some time ago, I asked if anyone out in net.land had some experience
with APL2/PC, especially with the quadNA function. So far, I've
gotten quite a few messages from interested people asking me to
send them any info I received, but there's nothing to report on
just yet.

Therefore, I am repeating my request: If you have an opinion on
the usefulness of quadNA (or of the product in general) then I would
greatly appreciate your comments.

Please respond by e-mail and I'll summarize to the net.
Thanx,

My experience with APL2 on _mainframes_ has been that quadNA is an extremely
useful capability. For example, we used to quadNA IBM's ESSL routines into
APL2, so we could take advantage of the optimized code and utilize the
vector heads on the system. In some cases throughput was increased by two
orders of magnitude.

Also, I love APL, but it's nice to be able to tie into the larger system run-
ning it. Right now I'm using an APL2-like product in a UNIX environment, which
doesn't support quadNA but a system function called quadSH which allows you
to fork off processes from the WS -- not as efficient as quadNA but to a
user it appears to work much the same way.

I understand that STSC either already has or is about to release its UNIX-
based APL with quadNA supported.
