Two British films, "The Hit" and "The Company of Wolves" are opening in LA this week. Presumably, they will simultaneously or shortly afterwards open elsewhere. I saw both at last year's Filmex, and both are worth going to. "The Hit" is a British gangster movie starring John Hurt and Terence Stamp. It concerns a hit man who has kidnapped a surprisingly complacent victim, and their trip across Spain. The ending isn't up to the beginning, but overall it's a good film, and offers Hurt, as the assassin, a chance to display his range. Stamp is also excellent. "The Company of Wolves" is a fantasy movie starring Angela Lansbury and David Warner. Taking the tale of Red Riding Hood as a starting point, the film is an entertaining telling of various wolf legends from a definitely adult point of view. It's just a bit perverse and quite entertaining. Both films are worth watching for, and may receive only short releases, as their publicity campaigns are geared towards art house trade rather than the mass market. -- Peter Reiher reiher@ucla-cs.arpa {...ihnp4,ucbvax,sdcrdcf}!ucla-cs!reiher
