[comp.lang.fortran] Public Domain Matlab needed for teaching

jeff@ndcheg.cheg.nd.edu (Jeffrey C. Kantor) (10/11/88)

I would like to obtain a copy of the public domain version of Matlab. To
the best of my knowledge, a Fortran version does exist in at least a widely
circulated form, if not public domain. This is what I am looking for.

The reason is to use this as vehicle for teaching undergraduate engineerings
students the rudiments of numerical anaylsis and scientific programming. The
thought was to have students write Fortran subroutines that would be then
linked to the Matlab interpreter. THis would give students

1. Practical fortran programming skills,

2. Experience with nontrivial program development,

3. Well defined programming tasks,

4. Use of an interpretive front end to their code for debugging purposes,

5. Provide me with a more or less automated way to test student code (using
    the front end).

I would appreciate any comments regarding this idea, particularly those
based on real teaching experience.
