1. I have heard nice comments about MS FORTRAN 4.1 running under OS/2
on am IBM PS 2/80. (Standard Edition OS/2). The user had 2MB of RAM.
2. PC FORTRAN compilers have been discussed extensively in articles in
recent Computer Language, MicroSystems Journal, and Programmer's
Journal mags. MSJ had a comparison of a Compaq 386/20 running Silicon
Valley Software FORTRAN and Microway NDP FORTRAN 386 with a SUN 3/260
and a SUN 4/260. The SVS FORTRAN running on a Weitek FPU outperformed
the SUN 3/260 and ran at 81% of the speed of the SUN 4/100. The
program used was apparently a stellar interiors model. Author was
A.G.W Cameron, at Dept of Astronomy, Harvard.
Another source said that MS FORTRAN 4.1 ran at 1/3 the speed of NDP
FORTRAN 386. Both NDP and SVS run under 386 DOS extenders and
(I believe) 386 XENIX/UNIX.
