The movie was tied in with a Ellery Queen novel of the same name. This info is from Holmes of the Movies, by D.S. Davies (Bramhall 1976), yet another Holmes-Movies book that I did not mention in my previous reply. Murder By Decree is also about the Ripper and is a far superior movie. (I have written an article on Holmes vs. Ripper in print and screen; it is a few years old now but ....)
