The FORTRAN 77 standard guarantees identifiers (variable names, function/subroutine names, parameter names) to be unique in the first 6 characters. However, most FORTRAN implementations seem to guarantee uniqueness for greater than 6 characters. For instance, VMS FORTRAN and MIPS FORTRAN (used on the IRIS-4D) guarantee uniqueness to 32 characters. I am interested in knowing the implementation limits for identifiers for various FORTRAN compilers, especially those running on super computers. If desired, I will post results to comp.lang.fortran. Please reply to me directly. Best paths are ciemo@sgi.com or {decwrl, sun, ucbvax}!sgi!ciemo. Thanks!! -- Dave (commonplace) "Boldly going where no one cares to go."
