[comp.lang.fortran] Fortran 8x seminar

brainerd@unmvax.unm.edu (Walt Brainerd) (04/05/89)

Fortran 8x is Coming!

The next Fortran standard will be approved soon, hopefully in the
next year. If your organization has applications programmers
or implementers who need to understand the implications of the adoption
of this new standard, you may be interested in a one-day seminar outlining
highlights of the new standard, consequences of the new facilities for
implementors, and important considerations for those planning to use
the new featurews of the language.

Topics covered include:
Array processing
Parameterized numeric precision
Data structures
Derived data types
Modules
Source form
Control structures
Pointers
Procedure interfaces
Bit manipulations
New I/O features
Implementation considerations
Portability considerations
Conversion considerations

I (Walt Brainerd, Director of Technical Work for ANSI X3J3)
will be the presenter at the location of your choice.
Call for cost, etc. or send e-mail if you are interested.

Just to clarify a couple of things in this "ad", Walt is a long
standing member of X3J3 and is the keeper of the document that
is being produced by X3J3. He in no way directs (as in Director)
the work of X3J3. The committee does what it VOTES TO DO and
Walt then takes what the committee has accepted and adds, deletes,
and corrects the document that will be forwarded to X3 for the next
public review. Walt gets 1 vote the same as any other member
of the committee.

Walt knows a lot about the new proposed standard because he's
lived with it for many years. He has been a key contributor
to this standard and certainly well versed in what is in the
current proposal.

Also, Walt has always voted YES on the proposed standard. In the
last ballot on S8.110 taken in the committee, there were still 12
NO votes. I doubt that you will get the negative view represented
as part of any seminar that Walt might present.

It is his offical title.

True. But Walt has been there longer than almost anyone else. His
knowledge of what has been discussed, and how we got here is matched
by few.

Since it does seem likely that the document will be passed, a seminar
on what will be in the starndard should be of great interest. I can
heartily recommend Walt to those who wish to learn what the standard
is likely to be, why it is what it is, etc.
