For those on the net that want to find out what all the noise about the
Fortran 8x draft standard is, but don't care to wade through an inch or
more of standardese, there is an alternative. John Reid and Mike Metcalf
have updated their book explaining the draft standard to match the version
that is currently in public review (until November 24th). I recommend it
either as a companion to the draft itself, or (for those with more casual
interest) standing alone. I guess I should add here that (aside from
friendship) I am not connected with Metcalf and Reid, nor their publisher -
so hold your flames about commercial announcements. Details are below (from
an e-mail sent to all X3J3 members).

Fortran 8x Explained, M. Metcalf and J. Reid, Revised 1989 Edition
------------------------------------------------------------------
A new edition of this book is being published in early September. It
corresponds to S8.112, the second draft proposed standard for Fortran 8x,
now entering its periods of US and international public review.
Compared with the first edition, it has been completely revised to
remove features no longer in the draft, to add the new ones, and to
make all other necessary changes. The text has been completely revised,
and new explanatory material added in places. A 'Solutions to Exercises'
appendix has been added. In all, it is over 30 pages longer.
