After all the hoopla about The Purple Rose of Cairo on the net, I'll make a few additions: This reminds me quite a bit of one of Allen's short stories, which tend to resemble Fables with Comic Overtones. He takes the fantastic happenings of a Fable and shades them with some inside-out humor (I mean, what would it really be like to have someone come off of the screen? Tom's ignorances and abilities are really pretty funny). He tends to make you chuckle at the *idea* of something, instead of the actions on the screen. As to the ending, I found it appropriate and touching, not to mention very universal. I think that for all the people who spend their time analyzing the "art" of the film (and here I include all those wonderful University professors who feel that EVERYONE must see the truth of Le Chien Andelou (spelling?) fifty times), most people go for entertainment, for laughs, and mostly for escape. And Farrow's character goes back to that, just as we have gone to the theater to dim the present and spotlight another life. A good film, especially for Bargain Prices (this on a double bill with Zelig would be excellent). "OW! Rubber spider venom! That's not fair!" Moriarty, aka Jeff Meyer John Fluke Mfg. Co., Inc.
